John C. Nealy, age 19, of West Hempstead, was arrested on Monday, June 28, by Long Beach Police after an officer spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and aggressively passing a stopped vehicle in a single lane of traffic.
The vehicle continued operating recklessly through an intersection, which was crowded with numerous vehicles and dozens of pedestrians, both on the sidewalk and in the street, said Sergeant Brett Curtis.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however, Nealy refused to stop, fleeing from officers, Curtis said.
Subsequently, officers were able to stop the vehicle when it became stuck in traffic.
Nealy was arrested at the scene and charged with:
- Reckless driving
- Unlawful fleeing a police officer
- Speed not reasonable
- Following too closely.
